The San Ysidro and Otay Mesa borders have been temporarily closed on a few occasions in the past few weeks for exercises and safety reasons due to the migrant caravan. The borders are all currently open and operating. For the latest on border closures, you can follow CBP San Diego on Twitter or check in on our Baja Road Conditions page.

Aletha Patchen

The Passing of Aletha Patchen

Aletha Patchen passed away on November 11th at the age of 89. A great adventurer, Aletha was the first woman to cross the finish line and to win both the Baja 500 and the Baja 1000. Aletha and her husband Marvin were Baja enthusiasts and write two books about Baja, “Baja Adventures by Land, Sea, and Air” and “Baja Outpost: The Guest Book from Patchen’s Cabin.” The later was a book recounting the stories of travelers who stopped at their cabin in Cataviña on their way to or from Baja adventures. Aletha passed away one week before her 90th birthday.
