April 2023 Baja Bulletin

Sinkhole in Tijuana

A large sinkhole opened up in Tijuana along Via Rápida Mexico 1 on the way into Playas de Tijuana. This has caused a partial road closure and long lines of traffic. The nearby free road has also been affected by closures and traffic delays. Repairs are expected to take months. We advise avoiding the area if possible and crossing the border at Otay Mesa or Tecate.

SANDAG and Caltrans will be releasing a mobile app this summer that will collect data to improve efficiency at the San Diego/Mexico border crossings. The free app will provide real-time information on wait times for southbound and northbound border crossings. The app will work for San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, and the Otay Mesa East crossing when it opens in 2024.

ATV/UTV Insurance Policies

ATVs or UTVs need to have a separate Mexican insurance policy for at least liability for when they are being driven. Discover Baja offers both liability and full coverage policies. Full coverage will cover up to $40,000 in value for fire, collision, and theft.

San Diego Ensenada Ferry

A binational ferry between San Diego and Ensenada is expected to begin operations this summer. The trip will take just over 2 hours each direction from port to port and will eliminate the border wait that comes with driving. More information will be available soon.

There is currently not a working ATM in Mulegé. You’ll need to get cash in Loreto or Santa Rosalía.

No Cell Phone Use While Driving

A reminder that using your cell phone while driving is illegal in Mexico as it is in the United States. If you’re pulled over by the police in Baja, here’s a reminder of what to do. Please don’t ever give money to an officer as it’s illegal to do and perpetuates the problem of police pulling over foreigners in order to get a mordida or bribe. If you’re in the state of Baja California (norte), print this document to keep in your glove box to show the officer.
