Mama Espinoza
Discover Baja is proud to be a sponsor of the Flying Samaritans and the Doña Anita Espinoza Museum in El Rosario through the sale of the beautiful portrait of her by renowned artist Harley Brown.

Mama Espinoza

Never Ending Flight
Many Discover Baja readers have visited Mama Espinoza's Restaurant in El Rosario. How many realize that charitable group, The Flying Samaritans was born in El Rosario back in 1961. An American pilot, Aileen Saunders Mellott, with her friends returning to San Diego from La Paz was forced to land near the village of El Rosario. There she met Doña Anita Espinoza. Impressed by her and grateful for the assistance they received they decided to make a return trip to bring gifts and clothes to the needy village. A doctor, Dale E. Hoyt, came along.

The village had no regular medical services. Little did they know that an organization had just been born, The Flying Samaritans. They are doctors, nurses, and caring individuals that offer free medical services to remote villages and people who could otherwise not afford care. El Rosario calls them the Flying Angels. The first clinics were in the Doña Anita's home. The organization has handled over 250,000 patient visits since its founding.

La Doña Anita Espinoza is now 97 years old. She has 112 living relatives spanning five generations. She traveled by wagon with her mother for 22 days in 1912 from El Rosario to Calexico, CA to escape the Mexican Revolution. The wagon used was recently restored and returned to her.

To this lady came the artist Harley Brown. Author of "Eternal Truths for Every Artist" and "Confessions of a Starving Artist", Harley is a master portrait painter. He has captured the majesty of Doña Anita, her humility, optimism, love and strength. A portrait that reflects both her and The Flying Samaritans. She is the guiding spirit of the organization.

The aim is to sell a limited number of giclée prints of her painting to raise money for The Flying Samaritans and to build a museum in El Rosario to document her life with special emphasis on "The Birth of the Flying Samaritans". The flight started in 1961 with Aileen Mellot and Dale Hoyt. The flight has never ended and should never end.

The cost of the print is $595.00 of which $250.00 will be donated to The Flying Samaritans. The print is 16 x 20, framed, with a nameplate. The print will be numbered and signed by both Harley Brown and Doña Anita. The book "Anita, The Legend of El Rosario" by Martin Barron is also included.
